To start, you must:
- Have a high school diploma
- Be 18 years of age or older
Complete 90 Hours of Approved North Dakota Pre-Licensing Education
To start, you must successfully complete 90 hours of Pre-Licensing real estate courses.
Pass the course final exam
After you complete all the course materials, meet the minimum time requirement, and pass the practice exam, there is a course final exam. The minimum passing score is 70%.
Submit your North Dakota Real Estate Salesperson Application
- Students need to submit their Real Estate Salesperson Application.
- Alongside the application, you will need to submit your Criminal History Record Check Request Form (SFN 60688).
- The real estate salesperson application fee is $150. As a part of this process, the North Dakota Real Estate Commission will also run your credit, which will cost you an additional $8.
Submit your fingerprints
Once your initial application is received, you’ll receive a fingerprint kit in the mail. Complete and send it back to the North Dakota Real Estate Commission with a check or money order for $41.25 made out to the ND Attorney General.
Take the North Dakota Real Estate Examination
- Once everything checks out on your credit report and criminal history, you will be emailed a test code for the National and State portions of the North Dakota real estate exam.
- Once you get this code, you can schedule to take the test with AMP, and you will provide them your test code.
Acquire Errors and Omissions insurance
You must have an E&O insurance policy in place before obtaining an active license. E&O insurance, also known as professional liability insurance, helps protect you from lawsuits that claim you made a mistake. For more information, click here.
Find a Sponsoring Broker
To be licensed, you must first be associated with a current and active North Dakota Sponsoring Broker. It's important to find the right broker to work with since this person will serve as your mentor as you start your new career in real estate.
Here are some questions to consider during your search:
- What is their reputation, both locally and nationally?
- What kind of real estate agents are they looking for?
- Are they technologically advanced and up-to-date with the latest systems?
- How do they support their agents with education and training?
- What kind of commission structure do they offer?
- Do they offer benefits?
- Do they provide their agents with leads and marketing material?
- Is there room to grow with the brokerage?
Submit your request for a real estate license
Final request for licensure in North Dakota includes
- Submitting your North Dakota Application To Issue Real Estate License.
- E&O insurance document.
- Certificate of Pre-Licensing Education.
- State and National exam score results from AMP.
- Signature and sign off from your Sponsoring Broker on the application.
You can also apply for an “inactive” North Dakota real estate license. In this scenario, you’ll need to complete all of the steps above except for finding a Sponsoring Broker and getting Errors and Omissions insurance. When you’re ready to get an active license and begin selling real estate, you’ll need to resubmit the final real estate license application with an approved Sponsoring Broker and E&O insurance.
